Exciting USY Updates for 2026

Hello hello USY! I’m sure you’ve heard whisperings among the grapevine about some changes we are making to the constitution and that elections are coming up.

As USY continues to strengthen its leadership and clarify expectations for international officers, several constitutional changes have been adopted ahead of the upcoming International Executive Board (IEB) elections. These updates are designed to support effective leadership, ensure continuity, and help international officers focus fully on their roles.

One of the most significant changes clarifies that IEB officers may not simultaneously serve on a Regional Board or Community Council during their international term. This update was made to ensure that international leadership remains an officer’s primary responsibility, without competing commitments at the regional or community level. In rare cases where holding both roles is truly necessary, the USY President and Director may grant an exception, though candidates may not petition for one themselves.

Another major update is the creation of the Executive Vice President position. Appointed by the International President from among the elected officers and approved by the Teen Leadership Council, International General Board, and Regional Presidents, the Executive Vice President provides continuity in leadership. They will step in when the President is absent and will automatically become President if the President leaves office early or is removed. Any resulting vacancy will be filled using existing constitutional procedures, and the role carries no additional responsibilities unless assigned by the President.

In addition to these two major changes, several other updates were made to improve clarity and accountability within international leadership. The President-Elect is now required to appoint the Teen Leadership Council within three months of the election, with the goal of having it in place by June 1. All IEB officers are also required to complete twenty hours of community service during their term, reinforcing USY’s commitment to service and social responsibility. The constitution now clarifies rules around re-election for current IEB members and establishes a vote of affirmation process for candidates who run unopposed.

With these updates in place, USY is excited to open elections for the next International Executive Board. The IEB includes the International President, who serves as USY’s chief administrator and official representative; the Vice President of Programs, who oversees year-round programming and initiatives; the Vice President of Jewish Life, who leads efforts around Jewish culture, ritual, and learning; the Vice President of Outreach and Engagement, who focuses on connecting new and returning teens to USY; and the Vice President of Communications, who works to share USY’s story across platforms.

Serving on the International Executive Board is a unique opportunity to lead at the highest level of USY, collaborate with teens across the movement, and make a lasting impact. If you are passionate about USY and ready to take on meaningful responsibility, consider running for the IEB and helping shape the future of our community.
