Middle school students at Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains prepared sandwiches for Plainfield's Second Street Youth Center (SSYC) on Wednesday, Jan. 13, during a meeting of their youth group, Kadima.
The pre-teens participated in the synagogue's monthly sandwich-making program to provide after-school snacks for school-age participants at the youth center. The Second Street Youth Center Foundation is a multipurpose non-profit organization that provides educational, vocational, cultural and recreational activities for youth in the Plainfield community.
Congregation Beth Israel's Social Action committee organizes the sandwich-making events, which are open to all congregants, as well as interested family and friends.
Kadima is the international youth organization for Jewish pre-teens in grades six through eight, sponsored by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.
Congregation Beth Israel's Kadima chapter meets once a month either at the synagogue or at outside venues, and offers pre-teens social, cultural and community outreach opportunities.
Congregation Beth Israel's Social Action Committee will prepare sandwiches again on the following Wednesday evenings: Feb. 10, March 9, April 13 and May 11. To volunteer to make sandwiches, or to deliver sandwiches to the youth center the next day, contact Laurie Woog at wooglaw@gmail.com.
