D21: Tikvah Programs at Camp Ramah
The Tikvah program at Camp Ramah is designed for Jewish teenagers with learning, emotional or developmental disabilities. Called the "Amitzim group," these campers are included in all of the programming at camp like sports, arts & crafts, musicals, and evening activities, right along with non-disabled campers. During the academic hours, Tikvah campers are with a teacher with special education training, and each Tikvah camper is paired with a camper from the oldest age group to further immerse them into the greater camp community. Within Tikvah, there is a greater counselor to camper ratio in the program to provide more individual attention, with staff who receive intensive training during staff week. Beyond simply having a fun camp session, there is a focus on independent living and self-help skills.
Within the Conservative movement, there are so many opportunities for us to find our sense of Jewish pride and community in a Jewish environment, be it a USY Convention or a Ramah camp. If this feeling is an important aspect of your life, think about giving others an opportunity for this same feeling by allocating your TO money to Ramah Camp's Tikvah Program.
