B11: Shekel
Shekel – Community Services for People with Disabilities' main
purpose is to give people with disabilities opportunities that are equal to
those of people without disabilities. In the words of Shekel themselves, "If
it takes a village to raise a child then it takes a special community to raise
a special child who becomes a special adult," and Shekel serves as that
community. It allows people with special needs to be able to become active,
participative members of a community by developing numerous different programs
and services. Shekel opens these services to all Israelis of all races and creeds.
Currently, nearly 4,000 people with physical, intellectual, emotion, mental,
and/or learning disabilities participate in Shekel programs throughout Israel.
These programs and services have enabled thousands of people with special needs
to progress towards independence, equality, self-fulfillment, and a sense of
belonging to society. Some of these programs include assessment and treatment,
education, community living, vocational rehabilitation, sports, accessibility
centers and other special programs.
If you've ever witnessed the difficulty that someone with a disability
has integrating into a society and wish you could provide assistance, consider
looking into Shekel. This organization helps Israelis under such circumstances
to feel as though they belong while actively participating in a society.
