B10: Project Ezra
Project Ezra is an organization that assists Jewish elders in need on the Lower East Side of New York City. Here are some bullet points about Project Ezra:
- They provide services, such as crisis intervention and advocacy to the elders. They have daily group activities, giving their elders the opportunity to interact within a supportive community.
- To get to these programs/activities, they have a van that picks up all of the elders (it also brings them to doctor appointments and to go shopping).
- They have homemakers who work with the frail, bathing them, cleaning their apartments, and doing their laundry.
- Project Ezra gives the elders on the Lower East Side the opportunity to go to an uptown shul or school twice a month for a luncheon/special program.
- To augment Social Security checks, Project Ezra distributes food and to stretch those checks, they also maintain a substantial direct relief program.
- It works with Soviet Jewish immigrants and is the only program of its kind on the Lower East Side.
- They offer therapy to the elders, such as art therapy, to enrich their senses and sustain their emotional and cognitive health.
Although that may seem like a lot, that's a small list of what Project Ezra does.
If you care about Jewish elders, especially immigrants, and would like to see them cared for in many more ways because it troubles you when you see the difficulties they face in today's society, look into Project Ezra. It may be where you want your chapter to allocate its money.
