C1: 1.5 Million Penny Drive
Past USYer Emily Dubois [Palo Alto USY SA/TO VP 2003-2004], founded the 1.5 Million Penny Drive in 2002 in response to the Hebrew University terrorist attack in Jerusalem. The number 1.5 million represents the number of children who were killed during the Holocaust. To honor their memory, a penny was collected for each child and sent to victims of terror in Israel, serving as a link between the horrors of the last century and the terrorism today. Although the original goal has been met, the Drive is still continuing. What makes this fund for victims of terror in Israel unique is that through a network of volunteers, 100% of the funds – every penny – goes directly to the victims, with no overhead, fees, or salaries. It is still run by Emily, now in college, who works closely with the ZIV Tzedakah Fund to receive biographies of victims in need of financial aid.
If helping victims of terror is important to you consider allocating your TO dollars to this organization.
