D14: Keren Or Center
Existing to give the urgent need for care to children and young adults, the Keren Or Center was founded in 1976 and serves as a Center for Care of Blind/Multihandicapped Children. The Keren Or Center is currently home to approximately 100 students – 9 of which are new for this year – from the ages of 3 to 30. Students are able to receive educational and para-medical treatments instructed by professionals. The Keren Or Center, located in Jerusalem has no political or religious requirements. They provide their services to anyone who is in need no matter their race, religion or gender. It is also home to several
immigrants from the former Soviet Union and from Ethiopia. With their intake of these 9 new students, Keren Or is in desperate need of several pieces of equipment.
It is very important that they get these items so that they will be able to support these students and take in new ones over the course of the year. This is an organization that I have great respect for. Having a set of grandparents that were deaf and suffering many other disabilities including diabetes and blindness in their older years, I know the importance of having a center like this because of the stresses placed on family members. Unfortunately this type of service was not available to my grandparents during their lifetimes.
If you have a story similar to one, or know anyone who does this is the perfect organization for you! Not only does it support Israel but it supports equality amongst all people no matter their background or any handicaps they may have. It supports the idea of one world – one people and that is what I feel ideal for the Jewish community.
