E7: Keren Geeta
The Ministry of Education has faced continued budget cuts, forcing drastic reductions in "supplemental extra-curicular programs." Essentially, this means thousands of teachers have been laid off, and tiyulim [class outings] are all but halted in many areas. Keren Geeta was founded in the memory of the daughter of Dr. Pesach Schindler, Rosh Yeshiva of the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem, who died at 38. The organization looks to support educational communities which reflect her ideals and with which she was involved. Currently, the money is being used to enhance the environment at the Goldstein Youth village, funding tiyulim for middle-school aged immigrants from Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union. It is at this very same campus where USY High and Ramah's TRY are based out of. Keren Geeta does not operate big time; their annual budget is approximately $10,000 each year, but the impact they make can be very real in these children's education and lives.
Israel offers vast opportunities for informal learning, with history behind every rock in and on every street and with its sciences at the forefront in the world. Experiencing all that Israel has to offer is an important part of welcoming these young new immigrants to their new country. If these are important ideals to you, consider allocating your TO money to Keren Geeta.
