D13: Jewish Braille Institute
The Jewish Braille Institute (JBI) was established in 1937 for the purpose of
bringing education and pleasure to thousands of blind, visually impaired and
reading disabled individuals. By putting together libraries filled with Braille,
and large print books as well as books on tape, JBI has been able to renew these
persons ability to "read" and also help to better connect them to the customs
and communities of Judaism. With nearly 20,000 books in their library, JBI has
the largest collection of Jewish interest materials in the world for people
whom cannot read standard print. JBI serves over 35,000 people a year and even
provides materials in 8 different languages to try to accommodate as many people
as possible.
Is this organization for you? Have you ever had the feeling that something
was so small that when you tried to read it no matter how closely you look,
or how hard you try you just can't make it out? Do you know anyone who is blind,
or has great difficulty reading? Do you yourself wear glasses? Do you want to
further enrich the Jewish community by helping visually impaired Jews be able
to play the same role in their community as any other Jew? If you answer yes
to any of these questions then the JBI is the perfect organization for you!
If you would like more information on this organization you can visit them on the web at: www.jbilibrary.org.
