Week 3 (May 13-19): The Deeper Meanings
Mitzvah Project: A large part of the book of Ruth is about tzedakah. Distribute tzedakah boxes at local businesses in your community to go to Tikun Olam!

  • God in the Book of Ruth
Recommended Source: Zot HaTorah by Jane Ellen Golub with Joel Lurie Grishauer, chapter 17, page 81.

We do not see any direct divine intervention in the story? Why do you think that this occurs in this particular story? Do the circumstances require that Ruth and Naomi persevere without the divine intervention?

How are the actions of the characters (Ruth, Naomi, Boaz) bzelem elokim, in the image of God?

How do the characters "honor" God? Are there any points when they do not?

  • Predestination vs. Free Will
    Recommended Source: Pirkei Avot (3:15)

Do you believe that the events in the story were predetermined? What, if any, actions by the characters showed a great of faith and righteousness?

  • The Book of Ruth vs. The Book of Naomi
What are the individual actions taken by Ruth and which ones are taken by Naomi? Who seems to have the more prevalent role?

Why do you think we refer to this as the Book of Ruth?

Would changing the book's name to "The Book of Ruth and Naomi" be appropriate? How do we see co-dependence between the two of them?

  • Heroism
Recommended Source: Jewish Leadership and Heroism by Jack Moline

What acts, if any, by Ruth, Naomi or Boaz could be considered heroic?

Should we consider any of these characters biblical heroes?

  • Lamed Vav Zaddikim
Recommended Source: Encyclopedia Judaica article on the Lamed Vav Zaddikim

Background: It is said that at any time period, there exist no less than 36 righteous people who are given the sight of the shechinah (Divine presence), and the world exists for their sake, with one of them being the Messiah.

How do Ruth and/or Naomi keep their world from falling apart? What role does Boaz play in this?

If it is said the messiah will descend from King David, and David was related to Ruth, how would that make the relationship between Ruth and this concept seem relevant?
