Dear USYer(s),

Before we begin, you already deserve a hearty Yasher Koach! The very fact that you have decided to participate in the first-ever International USY Learn-A-Thon deserves a great deal of credit for your commitment to learning and bettering the community.

In this packet, you will be embarking on a journey in the megillah that we read every year on Shavuot; the Book of Ruth. The Book of Ruth is a part of the section of the Tanach known as the "K'tuvim," or the Writings. Ruth is one of the five megillot we read during the year. It may seem, on its face, to be a very standard book. However, through this experience, we hope you be able to expand and understand the unique themes presented throughout the chapters of this book. The Book of Ruth is interconnected with countless other biblical stories, and has a special significance.

Because of time constraints, we are giving you two different options for participating in this Learn-A-Thon. "Track 1" is a track where you will study one chapter of the book of Ruth each week leading up to Tikun Leil Shavuot. "Track 2" is an extension of the first track, where you will spend the first week studying the chapters of the book, and then spend the rest of your time learning a different theme of the book each week, culminating with a study of the weekly parasha in relation to Ruth. Feel free to choose either track. In addition, for Track 2, the beginning of each week will include a completely optional, but valuable, mitzvah project that you can.

Use this time to develop an understanding of what you are studying; find some place quiet (or, better yet, with a group of similarly interested fellow USYers from your chapter) where you can really take the time to look at the text; it can be incredibly meaningful. In order to participate, we recommend that you have a copy of a Tanach, so that you can look at the various citations we give you and be able to read the chapters of the book. In addition, throughout the packet we will be suggesting various sources that you can look at for the themes presented in Track 2. We urge you to utilize them at your leisure.

So, on your mark… get set… time to study some Tanach! Good luck!
