2007 USY Chapter of the Year nominees

Tzafon

  1. Kickoff Trip to Boston – USYers went on a two and a half hour drive to Boston, took a Duck Tour (land and water tour of the city), shopped in the Israel Book Store, and ate at Rubin's Kosher Deli which provided a chance for new members to bond with the existing USYers.
  2. Lounge Nights – Once a month USYers stay after Hebrew High School and participate in the weekday minyan and then enjoy Ben and Jerry's ice cream along with fun games and activities.
  3. Grinspoon Sweet Harvest Festival – USYers went to this regional festival at the Yiddish Book Center representing Akiba in teen activities and explored the festival of Sukkot and listened to a local teen band called Happin' Hamans.
  4. Rick Recht Concert and Jewpardy – In a joint effort with the area's reform youth group we planned and implemented a game of "Jewpardy" (a takeoff on Jeopardy) for the teens which took place before the community wide Rick Recht concert.
  5. Mall Scavenger Hunt and Movie – USYers held the Havdalah service outside of the Berkshire Mall and then split into groups for a scavenger hunt which was followed by a movie.
  6. Spaghetti Dinner – USY held a spaghetti dinner to raise money for Tikun Olam and performed songs accompanied by a pianist for the attendees.
  7. Israel Program – USYers creates a large map of the State of Israel using photographs from family and peer trips to the Jewish homeland.
  8. Babysitting Program – USYers babysat for young families who are members of Congregation Knesset Israel and all the money made went to the chapter's Tikun Olam fund.
  9. Purim Carnival – USYers set up and ran booths and decorated the social hall for the younger kids to have fun, get tickets, and win prizes, with proceeds going to the Tikun Olam fund.
  10. USY/Kadima Shabbat – One entire Shabbat service a year is led completely by USYers and Kadimaniks, including the D'var Torah!
  11. Movie Night with Kadima/USY Sleepover – Both Kadimaniks and USYers came to the shul to watch a movie, this year it was Cars, and the USYers pass around their scrapbooks and tell the Kadimaniks about USY while eating ice cream, which is followed by a sleepover for the USYers.
  12. USY Elections – While eating ice cream USYers who wanted to run for a position on the chapter board read their speeches and there were secret ballots resulting in a chapter board for the 2007-08 year.
  13. Senior gala/prom – USYers created a prom with decorations (food, dancing, and music) for the senior citizens of a local assisted living center.
  14. Manginah concert – USY went as a group to the Manginah (the Jewish a cappella group from Brandeis) concert sponsored by Hadassah and the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires.
  15. Learning how to use the handicap lift for the bimah – USYers watched and practiced how to use the handicap lift which provides access to the bimah for those in wheelchairs and later showed off their skills during a Saturday morning service when it was needed.
