2007 USY Chapter of the Year nominees
CRUSY
Freshman kidnap to Kenneywood Amusement Park – we surprised 9th graders at home and took them to shul for introductions and ice breakers before heading to amusement park assigned with a Beth El Buddy. (31 attended)
Shabbat Dinners – held on four Friday evenings at members' homes and included services, dinner, ruach and Israel Updates. (average attendance 18-20)
Larger than Life – a floor-sized game during Rosh Hashana services of Questions/Answers on Jewish Life and the Holidays divided the group into four teams then concluded with a high holiday service. (32 attended)
Amazing Race – we divided kids into teams looking for clues around the city of Pittsburgh, including physical challenges as well. (30 attended)
Regressive Sukkah Hop – introduced kids to themed homes in different sukkahs of members of the shul. (22 attended)
Rent-a-Kid – allowed USY members to be rented out to members of the synagogue for a day with monies donated for their services. (13 attended)
College Night – held movies in our youth lounge with a college theme focusing on discussions of Jewish life on campus in between movies. (22 attended)
Feast of the East – a food competition during Chanukah involving a relay race and Jewish foods. (26 attended)
Teen talk was a lunch and learn on Shabbat with Rabbi Dr. Danny Schiff on Intermarriage. (24 attended)
Legends of the Hidden Synagogue – a competitive event with six teams held in the synagogue based on a popular Nickelodeon show with the original T-Shirts given to each participant. (closed it at 30)
A Night in Israel – we divided the synagogue into six Israeli cities with each "city" focusing on a different activity. (26 attended)
Covenant – leading Friday night services at a senior citizen home near our synagogue the first Friday of each month. (4-5 teens each Friday and we alternate teens)
Separate but Equal – an event that took the boys to play paintball and the girls to Beads2wear to make jewelry. (21 boys, 9 girls)
Skip School for Shul – a program during Shavuot encouraged USY to attend Shavuot services during the week and offered a luncheon to those who attended. (18 kids missed school on the first day of Shavout for this program)
Workshop with Gabe Salgado – focused on Israeli music and its political meanings. (19 attended)
