1998:

  • Israel celebrates its 50th anniversary.
  • In 1998 the Prime Minister was Benjamin Netanyahu, and Ariel Sharon was the Foreign Minister.
  • Danny Yatom, the head of the Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency, resigned on February 24, 1998.
  • Throughout 1998 violence ensued on the northern Israeli boarder with Lebanon. 23 soldiers were killed and 109 were wounded as fighting with Hizbullah continued and Lebanon fired rockets and mortars into Israel throughout 1998.
  • On September 10, Adel Awadallah, the head of Hamas in the West Bank, was assassinated along with his brother another high ranking Hamas official.
  • In November the first phase of the Wye agreement was implemented.
  • President Bill Clinton met with Palestinians and affirmed amendments to the PLO charter.
