Israel's History:
1991

1991:
by Jessica Mador, 2002-2003 President of SUSY, New Frontier Region

Israel:

  • The First Intifada, dated back to 1987, finally ends.
  • The remaining 15,000 Jews in Ethiopia are brought to Israel in a massive airlift through Operation Solomon.

War:

  • Israel is attack by Iraqi Scud missiles during the Gulf War.
  • Operation Desert Storm.
  • Iraqi missiles continue to fall as the US pushes Iraqi forces out of Kuwait.
  • The war is over!

Peace: October 31, 1991

  • The Madrid Peace Conference in Madrid, Spain brings together Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan & Palestinians. This was the first time most of the Arab parties and Israel sat down at a table together.
  • Details:
    • An opening conference having no power to impose solutions.
    • Bilateral talks with the Arab states bordering Israel.
    • Talks with the Palestinians on 5-year interim self-rule, to be followed by talks on the permanent status.
    • Multilateral talks on key regional issues; refugees.

  • At this conference, Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir said:

"The people of Israel look to this palace with great anticipation and expectation. We pray that this meeting will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Middle East; that it will signal the end of hostility, violence, terror and war; that it will bring dialogue, accommodation, coexistence and - above all - peace. No nation has expressed its bond with its land with as much intensity and consistency as we have. For millennia our people repeated at every occasion the cry of the Psalmist: "If I forget thee, Jerusalem, may my right hand lose its cunning." For millennia we have encouraged each other with the greeting, "next year in Jerusalem." For millennia our prayers, literature, and folklore have expressed powerful longing to re turn to our land. Only Eretz-Israel, the Land of Israel, is our true homeland. Any other country, no matter how hospitable, is still a Diaspora, a temporary station on the way home."

Resolution 3379: December 1991

  • UN rescinds Resolution 3379.
  • Approves resolution supporting that "Zionism is Racism"
  • Purpose: to eliminate any residual influence of the United Nations on the Jewish Israel Public
  • Ordered by Israel to be revoked in order to be participate in the Madrid Conference.
  • December 16, 1991, the General Assembly revoked Resolution 3379 with a vote of 111 to 25 (13 abstentions).
