Here is the timeline for the greatest year ever, 1989! By now the first Intifada was
in full swing, but there was much more happening, so read on!
- January 1st:
Fifteen Intifadah activists are expelled to Lebanon.
- January 4th:
Israel and Egypt complete the marking of the border near Taba.
- January 17th:
The Knesset unanimously adopts a resolution calling on President Bush to pardon Jonathan
Pollard, who was convicted of spying on the United States for Israel.
- February 1st:
Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir proposes a two-stage peace plan.
- March 13th-14th:
Foreign Minister Arens visits Washington and has talks with President Bush and Secretary
of State Baker.
- March 15th:
Taba is restored to Egyptian sovereignty.
- March 20th-22nd:
Prime Minister's Conference on Jewish Solidarity is held in Jerusalem.
- April 5th-6th:
Prime Minister Shamir leaves for an unofficial visit to Washington, amd meets with
President Bush and Secretary of State Baker.
- May 17th:
The Knesset endorses the government's peace initiative by 45 in favour, 15 against with
111 abstentions.
- June 29th:
Eight Intifadah leaders are deported to Lebanon.
- July 6th:
The Security Council condemns Israel for the deportation of eight Palestinians. An Arab
terrorist commandeers a bus on the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway, crashing the bus into a
ravine. 14 passengers are killed and 30 wounded.
- November 15th:
The Prime Minister meets in Washington with President Bush and Secretary of State
Baker.
- December 26th:
Prime Minister Shamir congratulates President Bush for the U.S. military operation in
Panama and the restoration of democracy to that country.
