Israel's History:
1984
1984:
by Liz Alexander, 2002-2003 CHUSY Israel Affairs VP
1984 was an important year, not only because it is the title of a George Orwell book,
but for Israel it was a significant year because of so many other reasons including:
- The Jewish underground operating in Judea and Samaria is uncovered and its members
given prison sentences ranging from 8 years to life; most are pardoned by the President
after several years in prison.
- A concert of the music group Kaveret in Park Hayarkon draws a record crowd of
500,000 people.
- Elections for the Eleventh Knesset take place; a national unity government is
formed, with the rotation of prime ministers; Shimon Peres becomes prime minister.
- Operation Moses brings some 7,000 Jews from the ancient Jewish community of
Ethiopia to Israel.
- U.S. President Ronald Reagan orders U.S. marines to leave Beirut and redeploy
off-shore, ending the American role in the peacekeeping force.
- A National Unity government (Likud and Labor) is formed after the elections.
- Ordination of first Conservative Jewish woman rabbi: 1984/1985.
- Terrorists take over a bus on the Tel Aviv-Ashkelon route, starting the "Bus 300"
affair in the Shin Bet.
- The U.S. Embassy in Beirut is bombed. (September 20)
- Rabbi Meir Kahane announces at a press conference in Jerusalem that his party
(Kach) is fully prepared to demolish the Aqsa Mosque, together with all other Islamic
monuments in Jerusalem.
- Rabbi Meir Kahane wins a seat in the Knesset representing his extreme nationalist
Kach Party, and continues his hate speech against Palestinian Arabs ("dogs").
