  • As popular support diminished for the Lebanese invasion, Menachem Begin resigned in September 1983.
  • Yitzhak Shamir held the post of prime minister starting in October 1983 after Begin stepped down.
  • A truck loaded with explosives in Tyre kills 60, Israelis and Arabs, and wounds dozens.
  • Israel and Lebanon sign a peace treaty.
  • Chaim Herzog became the 6th president of the Israel.
  • The Kahan Commission found Ariel Sharon and others indirectly responsible for massacres of Sabra and Shatila.
  • A Hizbollah suicide bomber attacks U.S. marine headquarters in Beirut, killing 241 Americans.
  • The Mufti of Jerusalem issued a fatwa calling for Assad to be killed because of his hostile treatment towards Palestine Liberation Organization.
