1978:

- January:
Anwar Sadat and Jimmy Carter meet in Egypt and issue a joint statement.
- February:
Sadat in Washington requests US as arbiter... Carter says US will be mediator not arbiter.
- March:
Carter and UN demand Israeli withdrawl from West Bank on all three fronts; PLO terrorists
operating out of Lebanon land on Haifa beach and kill 35 Israelis and wound 76 through cars and
buses; IDF begins incursion into Lebanon to root out PLO; UN demands Israel retreat from Lebanon,
Israel accuses UN of yielding to Saudi pressure; Begin visits Carter in US; 25,000 Israelis
gather to protest Israeli holding of West Bank - "Better a land of peace that a piece of land".
- May:
30th anniversary of Israel! Yitzhak Navon becomes Isreal's 5th President - first Sephardi to hold
post.
- June:
Israel ends its phased withdrawl from Lebanon; Israel Ambassador Unna visits SOuth Africa and
refuses to see play "Golda" because theatre is closed to blacks.
- July:
US VP Walter Mondale visits Israel.
- August:
Anwar agrees to tripartite summit conference at Camp David.
- September:
From the 5th-16th, secret meetings held at Camp David. Agreement is reached and two documents
signed - framework for peace in ME and framework for treaty between Israel and Egypt.
- November:
Israeli and Egyptian negotiating teams agree on treaty, but delay ensues. Begin and Sadat are
jointly awarded Nobel Peace prize.
- December:
Israeli consumer price index risen 50% in past year.
