- UN Resolution:
UN General Assembly Resolution 3375 was passed, which equates Zionism with racism.
- Treaty with Europe:
Israel signs treaty with the EC, instituting a free trade area for industrial products
and leading to a significant increase in trade. Israel becomes an associate member of
the European Common Market.
- Terrorist Attack:
Terrorists landing by sea attack the Savoy Hotel in Tel Aviv; 3 IDF soldiers are killed
in the clash.
- Suez Canal is reopened by Egypt after eight years.
- Israel exhibits the Kfir, an aircraft designed and produced
in Israel.
- The Knesset passes a law mandating direct elections of mayors and heads of
local councils.
- HIPPY - a home-based program for the educational enrichment of
disadvantaged preschool children, starts operation.
- AMISHAV was founded in 1975 with the encouragement of Rabbi Zvi and
the recommendation of Israel's Chief Rabbis. The organization has gained the support of
former Presidents of Israel, and many world-famous Rabbis. Its goal is the furtherance
of research and study of all aspects of the Dispersed of Israel. Dissemination of
relevant material through publications, lectures, and contact with lost Jews in the
world.
- Yitzhak Rabin was the Prime Minister in 1975.
- Ephraim Katzir was the President in 1975.
- Inquiry on the Status of Women:
In 1975 a commission of Inquiry on the Status of Women was appointed, headed by MK Ora
Namir, which marked the beginning of a change in the approach to the issue.
- Lebanese Civil War:
In this year a civil war broke out in Lebanon, and the "Good Fence" was opened on the
Israeli-Lebanese border.
- Arab Land Confiscations:
In March there were the events of Land Day, against the background of land confiscations
in the Arab sector, in the course of which six Israeli Arabs were killed by the security
forces. As a result there was a wave of unrest amongst the Israeli Arabs.
- Political Scandals:
In these years there were several affairs, involving senior politicians in the
Alignment, against the background of suspicions of financial irregularities. Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin resigned his post against the background of a bank account held
by his wife in the US.
- Party Alliance Terminated:
The historical alliance between the Labor Party and the National Religious Party came to
and end towards the end of the term of the eighth Knesset, against an ideological
background, but the excuse was the allegation that a ceremony held at an air force base, upon the
arrival of F-15 planes from the US, caused a breach of the Sabbath.
