Israel's History: 1971
1971:
by Noah Mencow, 2002-2003 NERUSY Israel Affairs VP
Here is the Israel timeline for the lovable year of 1971, so take a moment to step
back in time and relive 1971:
- The Black Panthers, a radical protest movement of Israelis of
mid-eastern and north African background, is active for some time; some of its members
later enter politics.
- Intensive American efforts to reach a settlement between Israel and Egypt
bear no fruit.
- Israel's consul-general in Istanbul killed by terrorists.
- The National Institute for Psychobiology in Israel was established at the Israel
Center for Psychobiology by Professor Joel Elkes with the support of Mr. Charles
E. Smith. The first Director was Professor Amiram Carmon from Hadassah
University Hospital, Jerusalem. The aims of the Center were to identify
workers engaged in research in psychobiology in Israel, to create mechanisms
to ensure regular and steady communication between them, and to support
cooperative and individual projects in selected areas of the subject.
- The War of Attrition slowly ground to a stop. A description of the war of
Attrition: Coordinated by Egypt, the War of Attrition was aimed at engaging
Israel in a drawn-out and bloody conflict which would make optimal use of
the Arab world's massive resources. Heavy artillery attacks were launched on
Israeli positions along the Suez Canal, accompanied by sporadic incursions
into Israeli-held territory.
