Israel's History: 1958
1958:
by Jessica Rosenfeld, 2002-2003 METNY Israel Affairs VP
WOW. You never know how important a year is until you really take a close look...
- Basic Law:
Did you know that Israel has no consitution? Instead they have what is called BASIC LAW.
Much like our Constitution, it outlines the rules of the nation to effectively govern
the country. However instead of being just one individual document, Basic Law can be
passed at any time and it becomes the supreme law of the land. In 1958, the rules that
govern the business of the Knesset and the election of Knesset members was passed by
Prime Minister Ben-Gurion and the Knesset were officially passed.
- Abba Eban Speaks to the UN:
In addition, Ambassador Eban made a remarkable statement to the United Nations regarding
Arab refugees. In it he contended that because the war (the 1948 War of Independence)
that created the Arab refugee problem was a war of aggression led by the Arab States,
the Arab refugees were the responsibiility of the Arab States and NOT Israel. In
addition, it was the Arab States that urged the Arabs residing in Israel to leave the
country for Arab states. Think of what kind of political backlash there would be if
Israel made these statements today...
Well that's just a little bit of 1958! What a year!!
