Milestones in Israeli History

1994 - Peace Treaty Between Israel and Jordan
On October 26, 1994, Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty, at a ceremony that took place at the "Arava" border crossing, near Eilat. The late Yitzhak Rabin, Prime Minister of Israel, and Abed A-Salam al-Majali, Prime Minister of Jordan, signed the agreement. The President of the United States, Bill Clinton, the American Chief of Staff, Warren Christopher, the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrei Kozryev, and the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shimon Peres, co-signed as witnesses. Permanent borders between Israel and Jordan were established, and agreements related to water problems shared by both countries were reached.

During the ceremony, King Hussein said, "the children of Abraham will commemorate and remember this day, the dawn of a new era of peace." Bill Clinton declared that the peace between Israel and Jordan is not a mirage or illusion, but a dream come true. Yitzhak Rabin expressed the hope that "babies born on this day will know no more wars, nor their mothers any more suffering."
