1978 - The Camp David Accords
The President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, invited the leaders of Egypt and Israel to a summit
meeting at Camp David, the presidential vacation retreat, near Washington.
On September 18, 1978 the Camp David Accords were signed. These led to a peace treaty with Egypt,
which was singed on March 26, 1979. Israel subsequently withdrew from the entire Sinai Peninsula and
achieved a long-awaited peace with Egypt, the largest and most important of the Arab states.
