Western Galilee
The Western Galilee is a kaleidoscope of geographical and historical features. Nestled in the
mountains of this region one will find scenic villages such as Peki'in, with its 3rd century
synagogue; tiny villages of Druze atop Mount Carmel; scenic views along the Mediterranean coast
at Rosh Hanikra; and more.
The massive mountain range of the Meron nature reserve defines the Western Galilee's eastern
perimeter. The rivers of the Western Galilee - the Ga'aton and Achziv - flow from the peak of Mt.
Meron (also Merom) towards the Mediterranean coastline.
Remains of nearly two centuries of Crusader rule contrast on the horizon with high-tech
development areas and resort towns, including Nahariya. The ancient port of Acco, a city whose
impressive walls proved to be the demise of Napoleon's armies, defines the Western Galilee
southwestern corner. A panoramic view from Acco reveals Mt. Carmel and Haifa to the south, with
Mt. Tabor towards the east.
Haifa is Israel's third largest city and northern capital is the heart of it all! Situated in
a broad natural bay between the beautiful Mediterranean Sea and the awe-inspiring Carmel
mountain, the city's terraced landscape offers a rich variety of breathtaking panoramas. It is a
very multicultural city.
