Random Israel Facts

DID YOU KNOW...
...that the Mossad orchestrated a daring plan in December 1969 to "steal" 5 Israeli warships from France? The warships were bought by Israel and being built in France, however the French government following the Six Day War placed an embargo on selling weapons to Israel. The Mossad set up a plan where the French would sell the remaining ships to a fake shipping company that was set up for use by the Mossad. On December 25, 1969, the five ships left the port of Cherbourg with 70 Israelis aboard in total and set sail for Israel, where they joined the Israeli Navy.

WERE YOU AWARE...
...that in 1968, Jordan's King Hussein warned Israel that Arab terrorists were planning to assassinate Moshe Dayan? King Hussein sent a message to the United States State Department, hoping that the US government would then pass on the warning to the Israelis. The US passed on the message to the Israeli government and was also able to keep secret King Hussein's role in getting the information.

HAVE YOU HEARD...
...that in Newsweek in 1998, it deemed Tel-Aviv one of the top ten high tech capitals of the world? The other cities that made the list include seven cities from the United States, Bangalore in India and Cambridge in England. Two reasons that Newsweek suggests could be why Tel-Aviv is so successful are the immigrants from the former Soviet Union who were trained computer science and the training received by many Israelis as part of their military service in the IDF.
