...that the Pan Crescent and the Pan York were the two largest ships in the history of illegal
immigration to Israel? The two ships were purchased in the United States in 1947 and were being
planned to sail from Romania to British-Palestine. However, the British exerted large amounts of
pressure on the United States and Romania for allowing the Jewish Agency to purchase/sail the
boats. The United States threatened the Jewish Agency they would withdraw support for the
partition plan if the Jewish Agency let the boat sail. In the end an agreement was reached where
the 15,000 imigrants on the boat would be directly transported via the "Pans" to Cyprus where
they were interned.
