How to Make a
Chapter Brochure

So you want to make a brochure?

It's easy! And it's a great way to publicize your chapter, too. You can put a brochure in your Youth Lounge, in the Synagogue's office, in other places around town like the JCC, and more!

It is important that whatever you put in your brochure, it is concise and short. Your brochure should be a quick read that USYers and potential USYers can take a look at, get the gist of very quickly. Not everyone is going to sit down and read the whole thing; they might just look at it in passing. Also, they don't have the most space, so if you use up less room, more information can fit! Do everything to minimize length, including: using smaller words, typing digits instead of words (10 rather than ten), and using less complex sentences.

How to Make a Brochure:
Making a brochure is very easy if you have a desktop publishing program such as Microsoft Word of Microsoft Publisher. They have templates you can use for them all, and you can just fill in information on the template.

If you don't have a hi-tech desktop publishing program that will help you do it automagically, you can also do it the old way: fold a piece of paper in thirds so it's like a brochure, so you know where the columns are. Then, on a typewriter, or any typing program, type up what you want to be in the brochure. Print it out, cut it out with scissors, and glue it on the paper like you want it to be. Do any drawings you want on it, and then use a copying machine to make your brochure!

Pictures in your brochure:
Putting a picture in your brochure is also very easy! There is a ton of clipart available, and also you can get free USY logos on the USY website.

Making Double-Sided Copies:
Brochures usually have two sides, making it a little more difficult to print than a flyer. Most modern copying machines, perhaps the one in your Synagogue's office, have the ability to make double-sided copies. If it doesn't, then the machines at your local Kinko's or copying services shop will have this ability. Look for "duplex" printing settings in the copier, and that should be related to printing double-sided. Obviously different copiers will have different ways of setting up double-sided printing, so consult your copier's manual for specific instructions.

Sometimes in order to do this, you need a double-sided copy to start with. In order to print a double-sided copy from your computer's printer, print off the first side on a single sheet of paper. Then, re-feed in that same sheet so that the empty side will be printed on, and print the second side.

Ideas for Brochure Content:

  • Testimonials from your members on how great USY is. You can get quotes from people in your chapter about USY, put them in your brochure.
  • Contact information for your Board, your Synagogue, and Youth Director or Advisor. This way, people can get in touch with them for more information.
  • Reasons why you should join USY. A brochure is a great way to get new members, so put in reasons why people should join!
  • Benefits of joining USY, and opportunities that USYers can take advantage of. List the different programs that USY offers, mail USYers get such as Achshav! and a chapter newspaper, and what kinds of things your chapter does.
