The 10 Commandments
of Listserv Posting

To maintain a positive environment for a Listserv subscribers, the following guidelines should be followed.

  1. Express yourself. Post messages.
To post a message on a listserve all you need to do is send your message to the mailing list. For the International USY Listserv, send email to usy@uscj.org from your subscribed e-mail address.
  2. Tell your friends.
If you enjoy the listserv, share the fun with other USYers.
  3. Use the Listserv Archives.
Sometimes, listserv mail seems to come in spurts. This may be the fault of either JCN (the company that supports the USY listserv) or your own Internet system. An easy way to solve this is to check out the archives of the listserves. Also, archives are a good resource and are a very interesting read as well. If your mailbox is not receiving list messages, you can still check what has been sent. The archives will supply anyone with up-to-the-minute updates of all Listserv. Go to the current monthly log. For example, link to "log9606" for June 1996.
  4. Please do not send “unsubscribe” messages to the list.
Sometimes USYers find that the Listserv is cluttering their mailboxes with too much junk mail. If this happens, they may want to unsubscribe from the Listserv. Do not send questions to the listserv such as "How do you unsubscribe from the listserv?" and do not send unsubscription requests to the listserv. This does not unsubscribe anyone and worse, it further clutters mailboxes.

  5. Do not send personal messages, a message that is meant for one or a few, to the listserv.
Think of how embarassed Rachel would be if all of International USY read the personal message you wrote to her and sent to the listserv.
  6. Do not post on Shabbat and Holidays.
Because USY is associated with the Conservative Movement, messages must not be mailed on Shabbat and other holidays, when a rest from work is required.
  7. Do not post single line messages.
These are usually a waste of people’s time and mailbox space, and very annoying. Unless it is a brief, but productive, question, a message with only one line is not appropriate to post.
  8. Do not brag.
List subscribers do not want to hear bragging about a specific chapter or region or Ramah camp.
  9. Do not send many messages at once.
Read all of the listserve mail before sending something back. Usually, there are many topics one might want to respond to. Express yourself in one message instead or four short ones.
  10. Do not be vulgar.
Foul language and negative sentiment will not be tolerated. We wlecome your participation but not at the expnese of others. At best, many USYers will not like you. At worst, you will be removed from the listserv.
