Chat Commands
To use the USY Chatroom effectively, it is sometime necessary to use commands in the
chatroom. The commands are very much like the commands for mIRC (Internet Relay Chat);
what follows is a short list of commands and how to use them that you can use to make
chats more fun for you and everyone else.
- Command: /msg (nick) (message)
- Description:
This is perhaps the most important command you should know. By typing:
/msg otherPerson hi how are you?
... otherPerson will get your message, privately, "hi how are you?".
This is a great way to have side-conversations that are perhaps off-topic, privately,
and would bother other users who are discussing the chat topic if you did it publically.
Note that abusing this feature by harrassing other USYers privately will result in
your being banned from using the USY Chatroom.
- Command: /msg nickserv register (password) (email address)
- Description:
If you want to save your nick for future use, so that no one else can use it, just type
this command. By typing:
/msg nickserv register myPassword myEmail@myDomain.Com
... you register the username you are using for yourself, and set your password for
the username you are using to myPassword. Now someone can only use this nick if
they supply the password myPassword; and in the best situation the only person
who would know your password would be you.
- Command: /nick (nick)
- Description:
If you don't like your nick and you want to change it, just type:
/nick myNewNick
... this will change your nick from whatever it was before to myNewNick, and a
message will be posted by the chat program that your name has changed to
myNewNick.
