Layout Plan

Achshav! Layout Plan
This is the basic layout for a 2008 issue of Achshav!. (Please note that this plan will vary slightly based on the theme of each issue.)

Messages:

  • From the Editors
An overview of the current issue of Achshav!.
  • Scott Strenger
A look at relevant issues to USYers through the eyes of Communication.
  • Jules Gutin
Thoughts from the Director of USY.

  • Adam Berman
A USY perspective on important issues from the International President.

Hadashot (News):
This section features articles and pictures related to current events in USY and/or the world. Examples include various USY programs such as USY High, HeChalutzim Seminar, and International Convention, or articles on prominent Jewish figures in the news.

What You Say:
This section publishes thoughts written by USYers in response to a challenging question asked in relation to the theme of the issue. The questions almost always invoke a thoughtful response from USYers.

D'varim (Things):
This section is where articles related to the theme of the issue are published. (The content of this section varies with the theme of each issue.)

Inside USY:
This section sometimes appears in place of Hadashot. It features a person or project that may be completely unrelated to the rest of the issue. Its purpose is to give the "inside story" on a unique or special occurrence in USY.

Interested in Writing?
Please sign up with the Achshav! staff if you have not done so. This guarantees that the Achshav! Editors have your name and contact information so they can solicit articles from you.

Article Assignments:
See the Achshav! Layout Plan (above) first for an idea of what types of articles are usually needed. In general, the Achshav! Editors will contact you soon after they have planned an issue to tell you the theme of the upcoming issue and to ask you for specific articles. Feel free to suggest your own ideas, especially if they relate well to the theme.

Article Submissions:
It is extremely important that articles are submitted in a timely fashion. Consult the 2008 Production Schedule to check when articles are due. Please try to even submit articles early. The earlier articles are submitted, the sooner the editors can layout the issue and publish it.

Length of articles is also important. In general, featured articles should be about 300-500 words, typed in a Word Processing program. "What You Say" responses should generally be 3-5 sentences long (roughly 100 words).

About Article Publication:
Every article submitted, especially "What You Say" responses, is not always published. We apologize ahead of time if your article is not published and we thank you for your hard work and hope you'll submit again soon. Most articles are published, however. We will try to mail you extra copies of Achshav! issues with your article in them. If you want more extra copies, write or e-mail your request to the USY Office with your address and how many copies you would like.
