Summer 2013

June 27, 2013

Group 2 landed safely in Israel, met their Israeli staff members, and headed to the Talpiyot Promenade, where there is a beautiful overview of Jerusalem and the Old City. There, they had their opening ceremony and headed to the Fuchsberg Centre where they will be staying for the next few days. They then had a study session with Rabbi Paul Friedman. Tonight, they will be having an orientation and a fun evening program in order to get to know one another. They  are really looking forward to spending the rest of this exciting  summer together!

After a morning of breakfast, shacharit, and learning about why we pray, Bus A was off to Rochester for a day of fun at Big Don’s mini golf and then a water splash maze. The group’s evening program was focused on empowerment. The kids made a list of all the things they have the power to do and then turned it into a song or rap to perform for the rest of the group. The groups then went back to their host homes for the night and are looking forward to seeing Cleveland tomorrow.

This morning during shacharit, the group learned about tallit, tefillin and the importance of making your own space for private prayer. The day was filled with trips to The Newseum, an interactive museum of news and journalism, The Holocaust Museum, and then some free time at the mall. They finished this great day off with a Bus B pool party and getting excited to head to Raleigh!

Bus C participated in a creative shacharit where they learned to wrap tefillin by practicing with fruit by the foot (also making a great pre-breakfast snack!) The group then wrote their own tefillat haderech, travelers prayer, and learned about the shma and tzitzi. The group was then on their way for very exciting trips to the Chalk Wall, Big Rubber Stamp, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where each kid took a pic with their favorite Hall of Fame inductee.  Finally, Bus C went bowling and played Whirly Ball, which is a super fun combination of lacrosse, bumper cars, and basketball. It was truly a great day!

Bus A is officially on the road and ready for summer! Yesterday was a minor fast day on the Jewish calendar and the group spent some time during shacharit learning about the customs of a fast day. They enjoyed their first shacharit service together and are looking forward to having a nice community to pray with for the rest of the summer. The rest of the day consisted of visiting the Pez museum, touring the Touro Synagogue, which is the oldest synagogue in America, and finally touring Boston on a Duck Tour boat. They are very much looking forward to the exciting summer ahead!

After meeting up at the airport yesterday, Group 6 took off on an adventure of a lifetime. This afternoon they landed in Prague, met their Israeli staff and tour guide, and then took a short tour of the city. Then they headed to the hotel for orientation and a fun program. They are very much looking forward to the exciting summer ahead!

Group 5 woke up in Lublin, which was once home to a thriving Jewish community, and started their day at Yeshivat Chochmei Lublin. There, the staff members led a limud and the group studied rabbinic texts, much like students of the Yeshiva did in the early twentieth century. It is in this Yeshiva where the great Rabbi Shapira invented the system of learning a page of Talmud a day, Daf Yomi, a system still in use today. The group then headed to Majdanek Concentration Camp. One of the most interesting and shocking parts of the camp is that much of the camp is still intact, giving the group a full image of what it looked like when it was operational. Then they headed to Sobibor, a Concentration and Death Camp, at which a successful revolt occurred in 1943; close to 600 prisoners escaped. The group participated in a memorial ceremony there as well. In the evening they met in subgroups and these small groups will meet each night in Poland in order to debrief about the day together.
