Group 6: Eastern Europe/Israel Pilgrimage
June 30, 2013
This morning the group began their 4 hour journey to Berlin. Once arriving, they visited the Memorial for the Holocaust, and did a tour of the the Reichstag, New Government Quarter and the Brandenburg Gate. The group then headed to the Topography of Terror Museum which is on the site of the buildings which served as the headquarters of the Nazi Regime from 1933 to 1945. They then drove to Checkpoint Charlie before heading to their hotel. Tonight they will be sitting in subgroups and having a relaxing evening

The group spent their morning in Terezin, a concentration camp located an hour outside of Prague. This camp, unlike the others, was used as a propaganda tool, or “show camp,” where the Nazis would invite members of the Red Cross into the camp to dispel rumors about the extermination camps. One unique element that came out of this camp is the tremendous amount of art produced by children and adults. There is now a museum with lots of children’s drawings, which the group spent a lot of time viewing. They watched a movie about the camp and saw the synagogue that existed there (another piece of evidence that this camp was different). The group then returned to Prague to prepare for Shabbat. Tonight they will have their own minyan for Kabbalat Shabbat at their hotel. Tomorrow, they will join Rabbi Hoffberg from the Masorti (Conservative) community for services at the High Synagogue in the Old Jewish Quarter. The group is thrilled to be spending their first Shabbat together in Prague. They will sing, learn, and relax. Shabbat Shalom!

The group spent their first full day touring different areas of Prague! First off, they went to the Jewish Quarter and saw many fascinating synagogues such as the Pinkas synagogue, which has the names of those who perished in the Holocaust from Prague all over the synagogue, the Old-new (Alteneu) Shul and the Spanish Synagogue. They also had the opportunity to hear the story about the Golem at the Alteneu Shul and saw where he lived. They had lunch in the Old Quarter followed by a walk to the old town with the castle and a tour of the cathedral. After dinner tonight, the group will participate in a fun and social program to end off the day!

After meeting up at the airport yesterday, Group 6 took off on an adventure of a lifetime. This afternoon they landed in Prague, met their Israeli staff and tour guide, and then took a short tour of the city. Then they headed to the hotel for orientation and a fun program. They are very much looking forward to the exciting summer ahead!
