Group 6: Eastern Europe/Israel Pilgrimage

July 26, 2013

Group 6 had an awesome and exhausting day: they woke up at 3:45am to hike Masada at sunrise. On top of Masada they davened a spiritual shacharit and participated in a great learning session as well. They then made their way to Ein Gedi for a wonderful hike and where they got to spend some time in the fresh water spring. After that, they headed to the Dead Sea, got to put mud on themselves and go into the water and float around! The group stopped over at the Ahava Factory, before continuing their journey to the Fuchsberg Center in Jerusalem where they will be spending their Shabbat together. They are very excited to be enjoying another beautiful Shabbat together in Jerusalem. Shabbat Shalom!

The group left Eilat this morning and headed to Kibbutz Sde Boker, where they visited David Ben Gurion, the first Prime Minister of Israel’s house, followed by a visit to Ben Gurion’s grave which has a beautiful overlook. The group then headed to Kfar Nokfdim, to ride some camels, and enjoy the Bedouin hospitality. There, they will learn about the Bedouin culture and religion, eat some delicious Bedouin food, and sleep in the Bedouin tents. It is undoubtedly an experience they will never forget!

The group woke up to their first full day in Eilat! They began with snorkeling and observing the beauty of the Red Sea (which is in fact, blue). Then, they continued to the underwater aquarium, where they saw sharks, tortoises, and an entire assortment of fish. From there, they had a delicious lunch in the Hallelujah Restaurant, followed by some free time in the mall. Their final destination for the day was the Disco Boat, certainly a memorable night for the group!

The group began their morning with an archaeological dig at Tel Maresha and they truly found some amazing ancient artifcats! Then, they had lots of fun cave spelunking, the exploration of caves. They did this in ancient tunnels and had an opportunity to go swimming at Beit Guvrin. Afterwards the headed to the southernmost city, Eilat, and will enjoy some time on the promenade this evening.

The group spent their day learning about Mitzvah and Tikun Olam work with mitzvah hero, Danny Siegel. They began their day at Leket, an organization that donates food to families and food banks around Israel. Everyone had the opportunity to pick tomatoes which will be transported to organizations serving those in need. After having lunch, they returned to base to have a closing session led by Danny Siegel, who discussed the other mitzvah heroes and other volunteer opportunities in their home communities. This was an extremely interesting day for the kids. Tonight they will be enjoying a fun evening activity.

The group started their morning at Mizpe Gadot, with a great overview of the Golan region before they went on a fun and refreshing water hike at Madjraseh. Afterwards, they went to Kibbutz El Rom to visit the “Oz 77” monument on the very battlefield where tanks clashed in 1973. There they saw a short film about the heroic Oz 77 Tank Brigade which fought against overwhelming odds to successfully defend the Golan during the Yom Kippur War. They group made their way back to Poriyah where they spent another beautiful Shabbat together, singing, davening, having fun, learning, relaxing and enjoying some more time together.

The group began their morning with a pleasant hike down Mt. Arbel followed by a memorable meal at Blue Beach Restaurant. They then enjoyed a refreshing swim in the beautiful Kinneret before heading to the mystical city of Tsfat. Among the many people who came from Tzfat are the prominent Kabbalists, Isaac Luria and Moshe Kordovero. Besides the Kabbalists, Tzfat also attracted numerous Jewish scholars and spiritualists, including Joseph Caro, the author of the Shulchan Aruch and Shlomo Halevi Alkabetz, composer of the Shabbat hymn Lecha Dodi. The group had a tour of the city, the synagogues, and then enjoyed some free time to walk around. Later on, they were given a tour of the wonderful candle factory in Tzfat. In the evening they made went to Kibbutz Hannaton, for a wonderful BBQ & swim which was shared with Groups 1 and 5.
