Group 3: L’Takayn Olam
July 3, 2013
The group started off volunteering at the Yuvalim School in Afula, a school for children with cerebral palsy. They partook in an ongoing art project of mosaic tiling and were given a tour of the school. They then headed to Haifa to get settled in and have an orientation about all the different volunteer programs they will be involved in.

The group spent their morning at the Kfar Yehoshua circus and had fun learning some circus acts as well as helping set up for a show that will be held for children of all different backgrounds. They then headed to the Kinneret, where they had a pleasant swim and enjoyed the beautiful, cool water before returning to the mall in Hannaton for a fun, social evening activity: surveying Israelis on various different topics

The group began their day at Leket in Nahalal, where they picked crops and other produce which will feed about 800 needy families. They then visited the grave site of Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut who was killed in a fatal re-entry accident. Following that, they headed to the beachfront of Tiberia and were able to walk around there for some time before continuing to the Majraseh water hike, where they had lots of fun splashing in the water. The group returned to Hannaton and tonight they will be watching a movie about Tikun Olam,” Pay it Forward”.

The group left Jerusalem this morning and headed North to Hannaton, where they learned how to build eco-friendly gardens, such as making chairs out of tires and garbage. They then continued on to a Halutziot tour, where they learned about the pioneers and their values. This evening they will be going on a tour of Hannaton followed by an evening program about Tikun Olam and Chesed.

The group began their morning volunteering at the “chava shel Bet Zayit”, where they spent a few hours planting seeds, picking weeds, and eating deliciously fresh melon. Then they headed the Machane Yehudah – the open market in Jerusalem where they can buy yummy treats, fresh fruits, vegetables, and more. Finally, they returned to the Fuchsberg center to prepare for their first Shabbat together which will be spent resting, learning Pirkei Avot, and hanging out with one another. Shabbat Shalom!

Today was group 3’s first full day in Israel and it was quite a busy day. They began by participating in First and Second Temple tours in the Old City, along with the City of David, Hezekiah’s tunnels, Robinson’s arch, the Davidson Center, walked around the Jewish Quarter, visited the Kotel and saw a beautiful view of the city. They returned to the hostel for a study session with Rabbi Paul Friedman and to get ready for an evening out at Ben Yehuda street. The group definitely had a fantastic first full day!

Group 3 landed safely in Israel this afternoon! They headed straight to Yemin Moshe which overlooks the Old City of Jerusalem. After a special welcoming ceremony, the group drove to the Fuchsberg Center for Conservative Judaism, their home for the next few days. Later in the evening, they enjoyed a fun program, prepared by their staff, followed by an early bed time in order for them to get a fresh start tomorrow morning.
