Group 2: Israel Adventure Plus
July 9, 2013
The group continued with Gadna today. They spent their day in the “shetach” , the area where they worked on field exercises such as field maneuvers, camouflage techniques using mud as face paint, hiding in bushes ,and more! They also got to experience field meals consisting of canned tuna and corn. In the evening they split up into their teams and discussed many different topics to do with the army. The group will be sleeping overnight in the field before awakening to another fun-filled Gadna day.

The group began their morning with an early Rosh Chodesh davening session before continuing with their second day of Gadna. Boy, did they learn a lot! They had an official flag raising ceremony, some lessons about weapons, important IDF values, and even some kitchen duty! Most importantly, they mastered walking in two straight lines. In the evening, they worked on night maneuvers and continued their week of understanding and experiencing a core part of Israeli society – the IDF.

The group began their day with a refreshing swim in the pool at Kibbutz Farod before making their way to their Gadna location at Tzalmon. The group arrived nervous yet excited, received their uniforms, divided into groups, and started learning the basics about the IDF. Tonight they will have their opening ceremony and their first night as “Israeli soldiers”. They are all really excited for the rest of the week learning and experiencing Tzahal, the Israeli Defense Force.

The group left Poriya this morning and headed to the mystical city of Tzfat. Among the many people who came from Tzfat are the prominent kabbalists, Isaac Luria and Moshe Kordovero. Besides the kabbalists, Tzfat also attracted numerous other Jewish scholars and spiritualists, including Joseph Caro, the author of the Shulchan Aruch and Shlomo Halevi Alkabetz, composer of the Shabbat hymn Lecha Dodi. The group had a tour of the city and two of the synagogues and enjoyed some free time to walk around. They were then given a tour of the wonderful candle factory in Tzfat, had a delicious lunch in Ein Zetim and headed to the northern Kibbutz Hannaton, where they will be spending a relaxing Shabbat together, singing, learning and spending time with one another. Shabbat Shalom!!

The group began their morning with a hike down Mt. Arbel, followed by a visit to the Kinneret Cemetary where they learnt about the second Aliyah to Israel and the pioneers. They then enjoyed a delicious meal at Blue Beach restaurant before having a pleasant swim in the Kinneret. The group went donkey riding at Kfar Kedem before heading back to their hostel and spending some time practicing for Ha’event, the main event with all the USY groups in Israel.
The group began their morning with a wonderful lookout point at Metula, on the border of Lebanon. Then, they hiked in Nhal Snir before heading to Kfar Blum for some fun and river rafting. Their lasr stop was at Kibbutz Noat, where the famous “Naot” shoes are manufactured. This evening the group will be participating in a fun evening activity at their hostel in Poriya.

The group began their morning with a wonderful water hike at the Majraseh nature resort. The group then headed to Har Bental, a mountain overlooking Syria, where they learned about the importance of the Golan Heights for Israel and discussed the significance of the Yom Kippur War. They continued to Kibbutz El Rom to visit the “Oz 77” monument on the very battlefield where tanks clashed in 1973. There, they saw a short film about the heroic Oz 77 Tank Brigade, which fought against overwhelming odds to successfully defend the Golan during the Yom Kippur War. Then, they went to Mitzpe Gadot and enjoyed a beautiful view of the valley. In the evening, they returned to Poriya for a relaxing and enjoyable evening.
