USY on Wheels, Bus H (Mission: Mitzvah)
July 16, 2012
Bus H had a full day today that began at the Route 66 Museum, where they toured and saw some classic exhibits of Americana. Then, because they had some extra time in their day, the Wheelniks had a competitive scavenger hunt at a Wal-Mart, which the bus loved! Later in the day, the group stopped to do some amazing Jeep Tours at Elkins’ Ranch where they toured the beautiful Palo Duro Canyon. Whenever a group was not participating in the jeep tours, they participated in an informative siha. To cap their already fun day, the Wheelniks got to select a movie of their choice at a local movie theater…what a fun day it was!

Bus H had a long day of driving from Kansas City to Oklahoma City today. On the bus, the Wheelniks had some impromptu sing-alongs and more importantly, had more opportunities for getting to know each other. Once in Oklahoma, the group will go shopping for Shabbat snacks and Shabuddy gifts and will head back to the hotel to get into their finest dress clothes to celebrate another relaxing Shabbat together as Mission Mitzvah! Shabbat Shalom!

Bus H had a wonderful day in Kansas City! They went to the Shoal Creek Living History Museum where they were treated to a walking tour. From there, they cleaned up the the lawns of a housing development that was created to provide homes for people who lost their jobs/homes. The Wheelniks then went to the toy and miniature museum where they toured some amazing exhibits. Later, Bus H went to the spectacularly cool science city museum and they will end their packed day with a fun trip to play whirly ball, a game that is a cross between lacrosse and bumper cars!

Bus H had a nice long drive to Kansas City today, on which the Wheelniks greatly enjoyed one another’s company! Along the way, they stopped at the Branson Hollywood Wax Museum, where they saw some great portraits and models. From there, they continued to work on their time capsule project and also studied the Torah portion for this week. Tonight, once they get to their hotel, they’re going to play The Newlywheels game, a wheels version of the Newlywed Game!

Today Bus H explored many different aspects of Memphis. In the morning, they did Mitzvah Clowning at the Memphis Jewish Home, playing guitars, singing songs, and playing games with the residents. In the afternoon, Bus H toured the National Civil Rights Museum and learned about the origins and history of one of the most powerful movements in American history. After their tour, they will participate in a time capsule bonding program back at the hotel and eat a yummy Southern meal!

Mission Mitzvah had a wonderful Shabbat and start of the week in New Orleans before heading off to Memphis today. Because they had such a long ride, there were some great bus games and bonding done on the trip. Once they got to Memphis, Bus H explored Beale Street, a street known for its deep Rock and Soul roots. From there, the group headed back to their hotel, where they participated in a program on Kavod Le’Ani, honoring the impoverished, an important lesson to learn for all of the Wheelniks.

With it being a Friday, Mission Mitzvah did not have a lot of time for so many activities, but they did have an incredible opportunity in the morning. Bus H worked with Backyard Gardeners in New Orleans today, which is an organization whose mission is to sustain and strengthen the Lower Ninth Ward community and revitalize its neighborhood through urban agriculture. It was such a wonderful Mitzvah activity and the group really felt rewarded after helping out a community that really needs it! In the afternoon, the Wheelniks were able to stop a store to stock up on some yummy treats and they cannot wait to celebrate their second Shabbat together in the Big Easy!
