USY on Wheels, Bus E (East)
July 6, 2012
Despite it being a Friday, Bus E is having a jam packed day. They started off with some unplanned volunteer work, helping clear out trees and debris from a store that passed through Chattanooga last night. Temple Bnai Zion was incredibly thankful for all their hard work-what a Mitzvah! From there, Bus E headed over to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Ruby Falls, America’s largest underground waterfall. It was magnificent! On their way toward Atlanta, the group played the ever popular whirly-ball, a cross between bumper cars and lacrosse. The Wheelniks absolutely loved it and it helped get them super excited for their shabbat ahead in the Peach State. Shabbat Shalom, everyone!

Bus E started off their day in exciting fashion by taking a tram tour of the Lousiville Mega Cavern, learning about geology, mining, recycling, and green building technology. From Louisville, they stopped on their way to Chattanooga to have lunch at a beautiful park. But what followed has been the highlight of their day: the Corvette museum. The Wheelniks were able to get into cars, take pictures on cars, and just enjoy the overall feeling of being around such nice vehicles. Don’t worry, though. They were still excited to get back on their Coach bus afterward. Bus E is spending their night at Temple Bnai Zion in Chattanooga where they look forward to the southern hospitality!

On Tuesday Bus E got an early start and headed down to Niagara Falls. The Wheelniks davened shacharit overlooking the mighty waterfall. Next, they went on a boat ride called Maid of the Mist which took them closer to the waterfall. In the afternoon Bus E visited the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum where they saw tons of hand carved carrousels, learned about the industry and had a chance to ride on some carrousels that are over 100 years old. The group then made their way to Cleveland. In the city they had dinner at one of the only kosher Subway restaurants in the country!

On Canada Day, Bus E celebrated by seeing all of Toronto’s hot spots! After a rip-roaring Shaharit, the bus headed to the Hockey Hall of Fame, where they immersed themselves in Canada’s major past time. After a nice jaunt through Downtown Toronto that culminated in a trip to Eaton Centre, the group was off to the CN tower where they enjoyed its amazing glass floor and scenic viewpoints of the city. To finish their day, Bus E will be having a BBQ dinner and evening program at the home of one of their staff members in Toronto! Such a perfect end to a celebratory day in Canada.

Bus E started off the day with an eye-opening look into the the Parasha for the week-Hukkat. Everyone learned a lot! Following this learning session, the group headed to Boston where they explored Boston University’s campus, learning about its Hillel and traversing its vast bookstore. For lunch, they headed to converted roadway turned green space, Rose Kennedy Greenway, found a beautiful spot and ate a scrumptious lunch overlooking the city! There was an even cooler moment when the mayor of Boston showed up at the green space and took a picture with the group. He loves USY! The Wheelniks then went off in groups to have some free time at Faneuil Hall, doing some shopping and gallivanting about. A BBQ dinner followed at their host synagogue and the day was ended with an interactive experience called 5-wits, where the Wheelniks solved puzzles and explore the very cool, very hands-on space of the center. After a long day, Bus E is resting well and so excited for their first shabbat together!

Bus E had a jam-packed first day on the road! They began with a long ride up to Boston that was well worth it because they ended it with a Duck Tour on the water to see all the sites of Boston…some of the Wheelniks even got to help drive! After this long day, the group shared a delicious dinner at their host synagogue in Sharon, MA that was followed by writing letters to themselves that they will receive at the end of the trip. For some fun to end the night, the group made facebook profiles for the pet rocks they made the day before and had a good laugh with each other before some much needed sleep. Bus E cannot wait to get back on the road tomorrow!
