Summer 2012

Because they had such a long driving day, Bus A spent most of their activity time on the bus today. They received their Shabuddy assignments, which are anonymous gifts that are given to every member of the bus from another member of the group. It’s always so fun to go shopping to find the zaniest gift in order to put your friends in a great mood for Shabbat! Afterward, the Wheelniks got busy writing Shabbat-o-grams, little letters to be given to each other reminding one another how much they all care for each other. After finally making their way to Gillette, Wyoming for Shabbat, the group stopped off for a little Shabbat shopping to get some yummy snacks so they can all celebrate and relax throughout the weekend!

With it being a Friday, Mission Mitzvah did not have a lot of time for so many activities, but they did have an incredible opportunity in the morning. Bus H worked with Backyard Gardeners in New Orleans today, which is an organization whose mission is to sustain and strengthen the Lower Ninth Ward community and revitalize its neighborhood through urban agriculture. It was such a wonderful Mitzvah activity and the group really felt rewarded after helping out a community that really needs it! In the afternoon, the Wheelniks were able to stop a store to stock up on some yummy treats and they cannot wait to celebrate their second Shabbat together in the Big Easy!

Despite it being a Friday, Bus E is having a jam packed day. They started off with some unplanned volunteer work, helping clear out trees and debris from a store that passed through Chattanooga last night. Temple Bnai Zion was incredibly thankful for all their hard work-what a Mitzvah! From there, Bus E headed over to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Ruby Falls, America’s largest underground waterfall. It was magnificent! On their way toward Atlanta, the group played the ever popular whirly-ball, a cross between bumper cars and lacrosse. The Wheelniks absolutely loved it and it helped get them super excited for their shabbat ahead in the Peach State. Shabbat Shalom, everyone!

Group 8 woke up in Lublin and headed to Krakow where they will spend their second Shabbat together. In Krakow, they toured two old synagogues in the old city: the Temple synagogue and Rema. The Rema shul is named for Moshe Isserles who wrote the Mapa, the Ashkenazic gloss to the Shulchan Aruch.  In the evening they will daven at the Isaac shul and will eat several of their meals at the olive oil restaurant at the Jewish old town. During Shabbat they will participate in a limud and return to the olive oil restaurant to eat seudah shlishit and do havadallah. The group is excited to spend their second Shabbat together; singing, learning, and relaxing. Shabbat Shalom!

This morning group 5 did an archeological dig at Tel Maresha, where they opened the door to the past and found ancient artifacts! They also engaged in some intense dialogue about Israel’s history. Then they went spelunking, which is the exploration of caves in ancient tunnels. They ate lunch, went swimming at Beit Guvrin and headed to Mahane Yehuda – the open market in Jerusalem where there are plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and delicious treats. Finally, they returned to base to prepare for their second Shabbat together. Shabbat shalom!

Group 4 hiked down the arbel followed by a pleasant swim in the Kinneret. They had a delicious lunch at blue beach before shopping and preparing for Shabbat. Tonight they will daven at a spot overlooking the Galil and spend their third Shabbat together resting, praying, learning Pirkei Avot and hanging out. Shabbat shalom!

Group 3 had a wonderful desert experience starting at Masada this morning with a hike before sunrise. They davened shacharit and watched the sunrise. Then they headed to Ein Gedi to hike at Nachal David with beautiful water springs and waterfalls. Later they made their way to the Dead Sea to enjoy the mud and salt experience. Everyone enjoyed floating in the sea. After, they made their way back to Jerusalem to prepare for their second Shabbat together! Shabbat shalom!
