Group 3: L’Takayn Olam

Group 3 headed to Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, this morning for a tour. They davened mincha, ate lunch and then they headed to their base at Nes Harim to practice for Haevent and enjoy dinner. They went to bed early in order to prepare for another busy day tomorrow!

Group 3 had a wonderful desert experience starting at Masada this morning with a hike before sunrise. They davened shacharit and watched the sunrise. Then they headed to Ein Gedi to hike at Nachal David with beautiful water springs and waterfalls. Later they made their way to the Dead Sea to enjoy the mud and salt experience. Everyone enjoyed floating in the sea. After, they made their way back to Jerusalem to prepare for their second Shabbat together! Shabbat shalom!

Group 3 had their final day at their volunteer placements today; it was an emotional goodbye because some very good connections were made between the group and those they helped and visited throughout the week. They had lunch at their base, followed by a debriefing session at which they shared their final thoughts about their volunteering work. Then they got on the bus and traveled south to ride on camels! Everyone had a fabulous time. After, they headed towards their evening location – the Bedouin tent – where the learned about Bedouin culture and headed to bed early in order to be well rested for their sunrise hike on Masada!

Group 3 enjoyed their third day at their volunteer placements followed by a delicious lunch together. After lunch they worked on their song for Ha’event and had the opportunity to take the Carmelit, which is the underground funicular railway in Haifa. In the afternoon they had an opportunity to get to know Arab Israeli teens from Wadi Nisnas, an Arab neighborhood in Haifa. They did some icebreakers and learned unique and interesting facts about one another. In the evening the group headed to the Grand Canyon mall to eat dinner and have some free to browse and shop around. What an exciting day!

This morning Group 3 began their second day at their volunteer placements! The different groups helped animals at the zoo, played and spent time with sick kids at Ram bam Hospital, as well as spent time with kids with special needs. After lunch they ventured to the science museum and had time to explore the exhibits. Then, following dinner, they had the exciting opportunity to listen to an Environmental Justice in Jewish Thought Lecture.

This morning Group 3 learned about the Amidah during shacharit and headed to their volunteer placements! They chose in advance whether they would be volunteering at the children’s hospital at Rambam, the zoo in Haifa, or a school for children with special needs. They are excited to continue volunteering there for the rest of the week! Afterwards, they returned to their base for lunch followed by a tour of the Bahai gardens. In the evening they participated in a program involving social media and communicating the message of Tikun Olam to the community. They had quite an exciting day!

Group 3 woke up this morning and had an introduction to the summer with a discussion of Tikun Olam and Chesed; what the meaning of each phrase is and how to follow through each of them with actions. Then they headed the Machane Yehudah – the open market in Jerusalem where they can buy yummy treats, fresh fruits and vegetables and more. Finally they returned to base to prepare for their first Shabbat together which will be spent resting, learning Pirkei Avot and hanging out with one another. Shabbat Shalom!
