USY on Wheels, Bus G (Pacific Northwest)

Monday, July 18th

This morning Bus G davened shacharit and learned about some of the blessings in the Amidah. The wheelniks then met their new bus driver for their time in Alaska. Later, the wheelniks spent time on a glacier boat cruise where they saw sea otters, seals, eagles and, of course, glaciers! The group also got the chance to chip off some of the glacier ice and try the water. In the evening the group returned to their hotel where they had a pajama party and played a game called “don’t forget the lyrics.”

Sunday, July 17th

This morning Bus G woke up an davened shacharit. During shacharit the wheelniks had time to write their own tfilat haderech (traveler’s prayer) ahead of their trip. The group then boarded the flight to Alaska. When they arrived in Anchorage they checked into their hotel and took a nap. The group then played some bonding games, at dinner and had a mash-up music evening program where they combined contemporary music with traditional Shabbat songs.

Friday, July 15th

Today Bus G said goodbye to Canada and crossed the border back into the US. When they arrived back in Seattle they went out to see the new Harry potter film. The group then went through their normal pre-Shabbat routine and prepared for their Harry Potter themed Shabbat. Shabbat shalom and enjoy the weekend!

Thursday, July 14th

Today Bus G took the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria. The group enjoyed looking out over the water on the ride. The group’s first stop in Victoria was Miniature World, a museum filled with miniature dioramas of famous events and storybook scenes. Next, Bus G went to the Pacific Undersea Gardens where they saw all sorts of marine life from the Pacific Northwest. Finally, the group’s last stop in the city was Craigdarroch Castle where they toured this amazing building. The group then took the ferry back to Vancouver and had dinner on the ride.

Wednesday, July 13th

Today Bus G went to Grouse Mountain. They started off with a gondola ride up the mountain. Once they reached the top they explored all it had to offer including Grizzly Bears and a Lumberjack show. Next, Bus G headed to Granville Island for a bit of shopping. Later on they returned to their host shul for dinner. Tonight, they finished the evening off with a Minor League Baseball game (Vancouver Canadians vs. Boise Hawks) and many of the Wheelniks caught foul balls!


Tuesday, July 12th

Today Bus G headed to Canada. When they got to Vancouver, the group headed to the Capilano Suspension Bridge. While there they also did a TreeTop Adventure walk on a network of pathways high up in the trees and Cliffwalk where they went walking over a bridge with a glass bottom. After that Bus G went to Stanley Park and learned about the First Nations’ cultural influence in Vancouver. The group’s very own bus driver served as their tour guide, sharing the history of the park. The group loved seeing the totem poles. In Prospect Point (one of the viewpoints at Stanley Park), Bus G ran into an Israeli tour group and spent some time chatting in hebrew. Bus G then went back to their host shul for a yummy pizza dinner and they were visited by the Pinwheel Regional Youth Director and Kadima Fieldworker. Following dinner the group played a get to know your staff trivia game.

Monday, July 11th

On Monday Bus G continued their exploration of Seattle. In the morning the wheelniks took a tour of Safeco Field, the home of the Seattle Mariners. There, Bus G had the chance to go into the team’s locker room and the dugout. Next, the wheelniks went to the Museum of Flight at the Boeing factory. Later on the group went to see the Freemont Troll sculpture. In the evening the wheelniks returned to their host synagogue for vegetarian chili and cornbread before finishing the day with an evening program.
