Summer in the City

Come spend an amazing summer in the Big Apple!

This summer, USY, in partnership with List College of the Jewish Theological Seminary, is proud to once again offer Summer in the City. For one month, participants entering grades 11 and 12 can experience the best of all that New York City has to offer, both academically and culturally. You will learn from top instructors at the Jewish Theological Seminary and Barnard College-Columbia University, explore the rich culture and history of New York City during evenings and weekends, and experience Jewish New York, all with other teens your age in a program supervised by USY.

How will I spend my weekdays?
The Summer in the City pre-college program promises an exciting, unforgettable summer. Four days a week, you will have an option to choose from subjects at Barnard College such as literature, film, art, law, psychology, the environment, and much more, while learning in a challenging environment with other students your age from around the world. In the afternoon, you will select a class at JTS specifically designed for participants in this program.

What happens at night?
Your USY staff will provide you with many opportunities to experience New York nightlife. Go see the Broadway show you've always wanted to see, go root for (or against) the Yankees and/or Mets, or go see an outdoor performance of Shakespeare. New York City has more to offer than any other city in the world, and as a participant in Summer in the City, you will have the opportunity to take part in many of these different evening activities.

Where will I live?
You will live in JTS's Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall, in a fully supervised environment similar to that provided on USY's other summer programs. Each air-conditioned room holds two to three people, and every three to four rooms comprise a suite containing a kitchen (although all your meals will be provided for you).

Any other highlights?
There will also be an opportunity to volunteer in the Jewish community, by visiting the sick and performing bikur cholim, participating in events with the elderly, and more. You will taste many of the kosher foods available in New York, and experience Shabbat services at various area synagogues. In addition, Summer in the City participants will hear from some of the top Jewish scholars in the world, who will lead discussions on a variety of interesting and pertinent issues. You will even take a break from the big city for a weekend, when we take you away to a beautiful location to spend a Shabbat.
