Ani Zocher: Pilgrims' Stories
Classic IP 2004, Part 2,
by Shari Rabin, Hanegev
So I already wrote an Ani Zocher, but something so exciting and Israel-tastic happened to me today that
Dan simply begged me to write another, and I just couldn't say no.
So this summer on Group 1, Classic Pilgrimage, my camera fell into the ocean at Rosh Hanikra the first
week. It was set down after a picture was taken and it rolled and then bounced down a bunch of boulders
and splashed in the ocean.
Needless to say, I was devastated, and I sobbed and wailed and made a huge scene. My whole group
comforted me however, and although I was inconsolable for quite some time, after a while I came to terms
with my loss, which included the camera as well as over 100 photos from my first week of pilgrimage and
USY International Spring Board Weekend (SBW).
So flash forward to today: after many hours spent slaving away over my "Mrs. Dalloway"
research paper at the library, I was picked up by my mom, who had some very happy and exciting news.
Apparently some Israeli guy was scuba diving at Rosh Hanikra, and he found my camera! He took out the
chip and was looking at the pictures, and he saw my SBW pics with people wearing "CHUSY IC 04"
pins. So he looked up CHUSY on line, and got in touch with the regional youth director there, and he
emailed her a few of the pictures. My good friend from CHUSY was in one of the pictures, and so she
figured out that it was my camera. So now the guy is giving the chip one of USY's Israel staff members to
bring to IC for me!
In conclusion, I am quite excited about getting back my 100+ pictures, and I feel there are three
important lessons to be learned from this.
- Israelis/Jews are way nice. This guy went totally out of his way to find me, and I can almost
guarantee you that it wouldn't have happened in any other country.
- USY regalia can help you! I attribute my upcoming reunion with my pictures to the CHUSY IC 04 pins.
So don't be afraid to wear your USY gear, because who knows how it might help someone out!
- Never lose hope when your camera falls into the ocean. Because there are good people out there
willing to investigate and google a bit and follow the trail to you.
