Summer in the City

*The pictures below are links; clicking on them will take you to a larger version of that picture.

Sunday, July 9th:
Sunday was spent at Six Flags Great Adventure, starting with a drive through the world's largest safari outside of Africa (lions, tigers and bears, oh my!), before spending the afternoon on all the roller coasters. It was an awesome time with more awesome weather. The group returned back to NYC in the evening, where they had dinner and an early night to rest up for another busy week!

Monday, July 10th:
Monday evening, after returning to their classes during the day, the group went to a show by Marc Salem, a “mentalist” who amazed the USYers with truly mystifying mind-reading techniques.  They didn’t know whether to be more scared or thrilled, but it was truly exceptional and exciting!

Tuesday, July 10th:
In addition to chugging along with their daily classes, the group had a chance to meet and study tonight with Dr. Stephen Garfinkel, a Bible professor at JTS and former International USY President. Dr. Garfinkel came from JTS to spend an evening with the group as part of the USYers’ "scholar in residence" program, which will expose them to other interesting subjects that are studied at JTS, aside from the Rabbinic literature course they are currently taking.

Wednesday, July 12th:
In the morning, the group brought smiles to faces as they visited once again with the  residents of the nursing home they are volunteering at.  The residents were truly touched by the kindheartedness of our USYers.  In the evening, everyone sang their hearts out as the group went out for a karaoke night, with every single USYer (and staff member) taking at least one turn at the microphone!

Shabbat, July 14-15th:
After engaging in some extra special Shabbat preparations, the USYers took part in a unique Friday night davening at Bnai Jeshurun on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.  Shabbat morning, the group took part in services at Hadar, a community minyan on the Upper West Side, followed by Lunch & Learn with Dr. Shuly Rubin Schwartz, Dean of JTS List College and mother of group leader Moshe.
