Summer in the City

*The pictures below are links; clicking on them will take you to a larger version of that picture.

Sunday, July 17th :
Today the group headed out for their Brooklyn day, despite some rainy weather in the morning.  Though it was still hazy and humid all day, it cleared up enough that they were able to enjoy themselves.  After walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, the group headed for Coney Island, where they had some time to stroll the boardwalk and experience the different sights and sounds that have made Coney Island a popular destination for many decades.

Monday, July 18th :
Monday afternoon the USYers got a tour of the JTS Library's Rare Book Room, which houses one of the most impressive collections of old Judaica books in the world.  In the evening they had a homemade Mexican dinner followed by a fascinating Bible discussion led by Professor Robbie Harris.

Tuesday, July 19th :
Tuesday after class the group had their choice of three events - some chose to attend an amateur acting performance downtown, others went to Queens to see the Mets play the Padres, while the rest attended an outdoor performance by the New York Philharmonic on Central Park's Great Lawn.

Wednesday, July 20th :
Today the group had their fifth and final visit to the Jewish Home and Hospital, where they visited with the sick and elderly. The workers at the Home could not thank the USYers enough for their visits and the smiles they brought to everyone!  In the evening, the group headed to the Center for Jewish History, where they viewed two exhibits, one on 350 years of American Jewish History and another on the history of the printed Talmud. The highlight of the evening was front-row seats at a concert by the Jewish rock band Blue Fringe, and many of the USYers met the band and got autographs after the show!

Thursday, July 21st :
The busy week continued today, where sandwiched between their classes the USYers attended a college fair at Columbia, where they had the opportunity to speak with representatives from many of the top schools in the country.  In the evening the group went to Central Park Summerstage, where we saw a hilarious improv comedy show, which included comedians from Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show, and VH1.

Friday, July 22nd :
Today the USYers visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art after their Barnard class, and spent their final Shabbat together. They chose to daven together as a group Friday night, and Saturday morning they attended the Hadar minyan, an egalitarian minyan for young people on the Upper West Side, which was held at Columbia Hillel this weekend.
