Summer in the City

*The pictures below are links; clicking on them will take you to a larger version of that picture.

Sunday, July 3rd :
Sunday was another busy touring day.  In the morning the group visited the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, where they learned about Jewish immigration to New York City a century ago.  From there the group walked to Ground Zero, where they observed a moment of silence, and the rest of the afternoon was spent between South Street Seaport, Soho, and a street fair in the Chinatown area, as the group was able to experience many of the different flavors of Lower Manhattan.  They capped off the multi-ethnic day with falafel and shwarma at an Israeli restaurant in the village.

Monday, July 4th :
The group had a true New York City 4th of July today! First they saw the Yankees come from behind for a thrilling victory over the Baltimore Orioles, and between the beautiful weather and the glatt kosher hot dog stand, even those who weren't such baseball fans had a good time.  From Yankee Stadium in the Bronx the group went down to midtown Manhattan, where they had dinner and then headed over to the East River to watch the Macy's Fireworks show along with hundreds of thousands of their fellow New Yorkers.  They had a prime viewing location for what is the largest fireworks display in the country, and it was truly spectacular - especially for out-of-towners, it was a once in a lifetime experience.

Tuesday, July 5th :
Today the group went back to class after the holiday weekend, and was treated to dinner at the home of Shuly Rubin Schwartz, the Dean of List College and mother of Summer in the City group leader Moshe.

Wednesday, July 6th :
In the morning, the group brought smiles to faces as they performed a play for the residents of the nursing home they are volunteering at.  The residents were truly touched by the kindheartedness of our USYers.  In the evening, everyone sang their hearts out as the group went out for a karaoke night, with every single USYer (and staff member) taking at least one turn at the mic.  Many new performing stars were born today!

Friday, July 8th :
Friday the group headed down to the Jersey shore, where they were hosted by Congregation Beth Judah of Ventnor. They got to hear from the scholar in residence Ruth Messinger about the interesting and important work she does as president and executive director of American Jewish World Service, which works to alleviate poverty, hunger and disease in the developing world.

Saturday, July 9th :
Thanks to the great weather, after lunch the group headed to the beach, before returning to the synagogue for mincha/maariv, and then left for a fun night out bowling.
