International Convention 2010

Opening Session

International Convention 2010 officially kicked off today with Opening Ceremonies. More than 800 USYers and over 200 staff, representing all 17 regions of USY, overpowered everyone with their ruach! The 2010 International Executive Board and the 2010 Co-Chairs, Max Beede and Sarah Tudzin, then welcomed everyone. USY Director Jules Gutin also introduced the study theme of the convention, which will focus on Caring for the Environment.

Tri-Wizard Tournament

Houses competed at the Opening Tri-Wizard Tournament, influenced by the Harry Potter series and an opportunity for USYers to meet and interact in friendly games and competition. Following the assembly in the great hall, tournament games of Daring, Deduction, Wisdom, and Danger tested the various skills of the USYers.

USY Choice Awards/President’s Address

The first-ever USY Choice Awards featured a visual and musical extravaganza of USY talent along with the presentation of awards to USY chapters for excellence in the area of Tikun Olam contributions, membership growth, USY Summer Program Participation, and USY on Wheels Home Hospitality. 2010 USY International President Josh Block also addressed the delegation with remarks and reflections of his term in office.

Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure

A highlight of the week in Orlando was a chance to experience Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure. Long lines and cool temperatures couldn’t dampen the spirit of determined USYers who pined for a chance to experience the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Heschel Honor Society Inductions

Members of USY’s Abraham Joshual Heschel Honor Society were recognized for their commitment to Jewish study and community service. The program also featured a presentation by Helen Bennett, a former USY Regional Board Member from the Pinwheel Region who enlightened delegates about her work as an ADAMAH fellow.

Eco-Judaism Social Action Fair

In keeping with the theme of Caring for the Environment, USY members had an opportunity to engage in a number of hands-on activities that raised awareness about different environmental issues at the Eco-Judaism Social Action Fair. The event was punctuated by a “Trashy” Fashion Show, where each region dressed up one delegate using a variety of recycled items.

IC Shacharit Live!

For the final religious service of the 2010 USY International Convention, USYers took part in IC Shaharit Live!, accompanied by multimedia components and a band of USYers and USY staff. After a delicious brunch, the IC 2010 convention video was shown where it was announced that IC 2011 will be in Philadelphia! The new USY International President, DJ Kaplan, then closed convention.
